Process for Website

HOMEPAGE

The website was solely created by me. I used "Wix" to create this website for our documentary. The original template of the website looked liked this:

I changed the "Development" heading to say "Cast + Crew" instead and then I got rid of the "Trailers" page as it was irrelevant for our website. I also changed the text saying "Electric Films" to our production company's name, which is "Polygon Productions". I changed the colour of the line under the production company name to blue and the 3 squares vertically beside it to red. I also made the font of "Polygon Productions" more visible and easier to read. The current version now looks like this:

The initial design of the website looked like this, with featured films made by the production company along with the dates they were released.

I used the same concept by creating 5 film posters for our production company, using photoshop. The documentary we created as part of our coursework is also featured as one of the film posters. I changed the colours of the text and banner behind the text, as well as the boxes, to fit our colour scheme and make sure each page is consistent. I also included the release dates for each of our documentaries/short films.

The initial page included news updates with a the date of each update on the left hand side. The headings are in bold and also a different colour to stand out against the background.

I made the title all in caps lock for a greater effect and I changed the banner behind the title, "In The News" from black to blue to fit our colour scheme accordingly. I also changed each update so that it based around the documentary that we created.

This initial section is adjacent to the "In The News" section. This is the section that I changed from "Development" to "Cast + Crew".

The first step I did was to change the title using the text tool. I then changed the colour of the banner behind it to red to match the colour scheme and keep with the consistency. I added in a mini pop-up gallery of the main cast and crew of BETA. When you click on each picture it will open up in to a magnified image. The frames around each picture are circular.

The initial layout appeared with the logo of each social media and a bar to say where to follow the production company.

I added in the handle name for each social media platform, which in this case is Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. I also changed the title to all capital letters and the banner behind the title to blue.

The original "Awards" section placed all the awards the production company in a horizontal line to make it clear, easily visible and professional.

The only change between the original layout and our layout is the "Awards" box. I changed the colour of the banner behind the awards to red colour that was used across the rest of website. I also changed the colour of the writing to white to make it more prominent.

This is what the original footer looked like at the bottom of the page. There is a social media bar with social media links, on the right hand side, to click on to follow the production company, and on the left hand side is the name of the production company and the website builder is was created with.

The changes made between the original template and our website is the name of the production company and the removal of the name of the website builder. Our social media bar remained the same and I added links to all our social media so when the website user clicks on one of the logos, it will instantly take them to the respective social media platforms.

ABOUT/CONTACT

The original page included placeholder text to temporarily fill up the space and a quote, which makes the page look quite plain and dull.

Initial

I changed the colour of the banner behind the word "About" from black to blue and also made all of the letters in caps lock. I also changed the quote, font and colour to match the theme of our documentary and colour scheme. I created a collage with 8 various shots from our documentary to keep the users engaged as they explore our website.

Our Website

The contact sub-section within the "About" page includes the address, telephone number and fax of the production company as well as an area to send an email to the production company and a quote.

Initial

The elements I changed in this section are: the colour of the banner behind the words "Contact", all the simple letters to capital letters, the colour of the "Send" box and the quote along with it's font and colour.

Our Website

Films

The initial layout includes a film poster from a film created by the production company with a box adjacent to it, providing a plot summary and the names of the directors, etc.

Initial

I copied their layout, except I changed all the information accordingly to fit our documentary and production company.

Cast + Crew

The original layout was based on development of the films of the production company. This included all the films that are "Coming Soon".

Initial

I changed the top half of the layout accordingly as this section is for the cast and crew of BETA instead of the development of the production company alone. I included a picture of each member of the crew in Polygon Productions and each cast member. I also added a message from the Director of BETA, which Adrian contributed as he is the main Director for our documentary.

Our Website

In addition to that, I included behind the scenes images to give the website users an insight to what went on whilst producing and editing the documentary. I made the gallery appear 3D and interactive, so each user can switch between each picture.

Our Website

News

The news updates provided are all based around the production company and an image is included as well as the date the event will happen or has happened.

Initial

Initial

I used the same concept in creating this page, except instead of basing all the new around the production company, I based it on our documentary: BETA.

Process For Postcard

The postcard was solely created by me. The first step in creating this postcard for our documentary was to make sure every element that I was going to include had to all cohesively work together and include similar branding to our other products - the actual documentary itself and the website. I used the background of our film poster as a common theme, making the background of the postcard the same. It is a black background with squares randomly placed throughout. The squares are all different shades of blue, except for one square, which is a purple and has a neon glow. The setup on photoshop that I used was A3 and landscape as that is the approximate size for a film postcard.

The title I created was using the same font as we used in the documentary and the poster for the documentary: "Batman Forever Alternate". I also made it in italics and added a drop shadow to make it more prominent against the background. I used the text tool to create the title as well.

I imported the same picture I used for the poster on to the postcard. I used the magic wand tool to remove the original background from the picture and then I enlarged it to fill the space.

Next I used the text tool and added the credits: "Directed by: Adrian Harder, Yousef Zine and Faaiza Feroz". The font I used here is Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold and I also made it in italics.

I then added the awards by googling for the "leaves". I had to transfer them on to photoshop, rasterise each layer and then use the paint bucket tool to make them white colour as they were originally black. I then used various fonts to create the text for each "leaf".

I then added the social media logos according to what social media we created for our film company - Polygon Productions. The social media logos I added are:  Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. I imported these images from Google and then transferred them to Photoshop. I rasterised each of the layers and then used the pain bucket tool to make them coloured white to stand out against the background.

Lastly, using the paint bucket tool, I coloured in the letters the same colours as on the game controller to create consistency. I also added a white outer glow to make them stand out against the background. This is the final outcome of the postcard for our documentary.

Visual Editing

We used iMovie as we did not have much editing experience, and it was an easy go-to default on our school's iMacs. Compared to the audio, the visual editing was actually very easy.

The top left section of the program contained all out footage. We had to sift through it to find good lines of dialogue that we could link together from each other the interviews, creating sections on specific topics. We simply cut them appropriately and put them down in the "timeline", then edited their lengths to transition smoothly as well as synced up the audio.

We also layered footage over one another to include the audio of one while showing the footage of the other. We also added in minor effects, chiefly text to identify who was speaking when they were first shown.

The only other effect used was the transitions, either fade to black or fade to white.  Most clips simply cut from one to the other without transition, as it would have become distracting otherwise.

Sound Editing

There were 2 parts to the editing process: Visual and Audio. As we layered our interview audio over with other footage, we split the audio from the clips. The program we used to edit our documentary was iMovie due to the fact that we are not experts with editing, so we used the default program on our school's iMacs. The majority of the audio is in green with some of the audio still attached to clip being shown as blue sound waves.

This screenshot above shows an overview of the audio in our documentary. A majority of the audio is split from the clips, with some audio still remaining attached. Throughout the entire documentary there is a backing track and multiple layers of sound from the backing track itself, the dialogue and the gameplay.

Audio that started over another scene had to be split from the clip and lengthened. This can be seen with the green audio file on the bottom going back to before the beginning of the clip. Syncing the audio and the clip was a tedious job and our resolution for this was to clap during filming to find and easily identifiable moment of synchronisation. This aided us to cover the cuts in the audio as we jumped from specific moments of dialogue to another. We either showed other angles or gameplay footage, including the gameplay footage's own audio. We had to balance the sound so that both elements were easily heard but did not conflict with each other. The dialogue tended to be louder than the sound effects in the game as it was of greater import.

The backing track continued to play in the background throughout the entire documentary. We used an into and outro song as well as an ambient noise from the iMovie sound effect library. The song is called "Borealis". "Borealis" was only 30 seconds long so we had to loop it during the editing process. To make the continuity sound more like one piece, we shortened it before the 30 seconds faded out and added the same track preceding it. Matching the beats made it sound as it if is one continuous piece, and so could be used for an extended period of time. Complementing it with the intro and outro was a simple task as both had very similar beats and timing. In order to eliminate any differences, we faded out from one and into the other. This enabled the transitions to appear natural and eliminate any jarring elements.

First Draft of Documentary + Evaluation

Evaluation:

This is the first draft of our documentary. While what it is lacking can simply be blamed on it being incomplete, there are a few things that we want to change. The video is lacking in variance. The interview shots are all fairly simple and lack any backing tracks. This makes the video relatively unentertaining to watch. We plan on editing in more B-roll footage of Duncan as well as including some gameplay. This will make cuts in the audio less obvious as well as give the audience something to keep them focused.

Targets:

  • Add variance to documentary
  • Edit more B-roll footage
  • Film more gameplay
  • Capture more different angles for the interviews

Costume and Make Up

Our documentary is basic in terms of storyline and built up characters, therefore there is no make up s such used on any of the actors. The costumes used alternate between the theme of school and the theme of being casual. For example, our main character (Duncan) is wearing a plain white school shirt on some scenes, whereas in other scenes he is wearing a casual dark green pullover. Also, the psychologist (Mr Martyn Stewart) is in formal attire as he is of a position of authority and is also in school.
